Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), through the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal (Ditjen Minerba), has recorded the nation’s nickel resources at an impressive 18.55 billion tons. Nickel reserves stand at 5.325 billion tons, with nickel metal reaching 56 million tons, according to Tri Winarno, Director-General of Minerba, during a working meeting with the House of Representatives Commission XII on Tuesday, 12 November 2024. "For example, these figures reflect the exact metal form of nickel, including 5.3 billion tons of 60% saprolite and 40% limonite," Tri explained.
Tri further stated that Indonesia's coal reserves amount to approximately 31 billion tons, with coal resources totaling 90 billion tons. The country’s mining area spans 9.11 million hectares, including 1 million hectares for exploration, 8 million hectares in production, and smaller areas for post-mining activities and reserves. He also detailed operational statuses, with metal minerals at 3.8 million, coal at 3.9 million, non-metal minerals at 73,900, stones at 85,520, and other specific non-metal minerals at 119,000.
