In 2024, the Jambi Provincial Government, through the Department of Plantations, launched a program to expand Arabica coffee cultivation across 300 hectares in the Kerinci region, with one of the beneficiaries being Desa Batang Sangir. This initiative focuses on expanding coffee-growing land by 176 hectares, which will be managed by local farmers. The program aims to increase Arabica coffee production to meet both domestic and international market demands. Koperasi ALKO, a strategic partner for local coffee farmers in Kerinci, supports the program by offering free training to farmers in Desa Batang Sangir. ALKO is committed to improving the farmers' knowledge and skills in coffee cultivation to ensure they can produce high-quality coffee beans with better market value. A total of 287 households from 14 farmer groups in Desa Batang Sangir will benefit from this program, receiving intensive training on coffee cultivation techniques, from planting to post-harvest processing.
The program also includes additional support for farmers through the provision of insurance coverage. Koperasi ALKO has distributed BRI PIJAR insurance policies to 150 coffee farmers, offering protection against risks such as work accidents. In December 2024, ALKO will conduct a comprehensive training session that covers various aspects of coffee farming, including selecting superior seeds, adapting planting techniques to local conditions, and best practices for post-harvest handling. Desa Batang Sangir’s head, Basuki Aji Suwito, has also emphasized the importance of this initiative for improving the local economy and enhancing farmers' welfare. The program ensures that all participating farmers are registered with the Surat Tanda Daftar Budidaya (STDB), which guarantees the traceability of Kerinci's coffee products in the global market. To further ensure sustainability, ALKO and the village government have signed an agreement to prohibit coffee cultivation in protected forest areas and commit to environmentally friendly farming practices.
