In the past two decades, halal products have seen a significant surge in global demand, attracting not only Muslim consumers but also non-Muslim ones who increasingly value quality, safety, and ethical standards in the products they consume. This growing trend reflects a major shift in consumer mindsets worldwide, with a growing emphasis on transparency, sustainability, and social responsibility in purchasing decisions. Halal products, with their clear principles, have evolved from a religious choice to a symbol of trust and universal quality.
As of 2024, the global Muslim population is nearing 2 billion, with halal consumption across sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, travel, and halal recreation reaching USD 2.29 trillion in 2022, according to the State of the Global Islamic Economy (SGIE) 2023/2024 report. Additionally, Islamic financial assets are projected to reach USD 3.96 trillion in 2021/2022. The report also highlights that imports of halal products by OIC member countries hit USD 359 billion in 2022, with growth expected to continue at a 7.6% CAGR, reaching USD 492 billion by 2027. This growing demand presents a massive opportunity for Indonesia to position itself as a global hub for the halal economy, supported by strong government initiatives, including mandatory halal certification starting October 18, 2024, to further enhance consumer confidence and market access.
