Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, has called on Indonesians to start focusing on the development of high-value plantation products such as coffee, coconut, and cocoa. He emphasized that these commodities not only offer significant economic value but also show promising growth in terms of the Farmer Exchange Rate (NTPR), which has been on an upward trend in recent months. In October 2024, the NTPR reached 156.32 points, reflecting growing profitability in the plantation sector.
Minister Zulkifli also highlighted the global demand for coconut, which is increasingly used in products like coconut milk, particularly in markets such as China and Europe. With Indonesia's coconut exports reaching US$2 billion last year, he stressed the importance of expanding coconut cultivation, suggesting that farmers focus on shorter coconut trees that bear fruit earlier. In addition to coconut, Zulkifli urged the development of cocoa, noting that Indonesia exported 641,000 tons of cocoa last year to key markets including the US, India, and China. He believes that with proper development, these commodities can become key drivers of economic growth in local regions, contributing to the national food self-sufficiency goal.
