Trade Minister Urges Climate-Adaptive Trade Policy for Sustainable Growth

Indonesia's Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, emphasized the Ministry of Trade’s commitment to climate-responsive trade policies, supporting balanced trade aligned with climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. He highlighted trade’s vital role in securing access to essential products, raw materials, and technologies needed to drive sustainable, green trade. Speaking at the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Climate and Trade (ACT) in Jakarta, Budi stressed the importance of cross-ministry collaboration to develop coherent, supportive national policies. “Achieving balanced trade that aligns with climate needs requires joint efforts backed by policies from all sectors. Ministry collaboration is essential to build a harmonized, conducive policy framework,” he stated.

Budi noted that each ministry’s alignment in climate-adaptive trade policies is crucial for advancing Indonesia’s vision for 2045, which targets high-income status with an 8% economic growth rate. He acknowledged that while trade expansion is critical for this goal, challenges such as geopolitical, geoeconomic shifts, and climate change present unique obstacles. “We must turn these challenges into opportunities that enhance societal welfare and add value,” he remarked. Addressing climate impacts on trade, Budi underscored the need for adaptive policies benefiting all stakeholders, including MSMEs, to ensure a sustainable future. “Indonesia must adapt, mitigate climate impacts, and safeguard public welfare to provide a better future and quality of life. Trade is essential to balancing these needs,” he concluded.
