Indonesia Needs Private Support To Achieve The Economic Growth Target Of 8 %

Priyanto Rohmattullah, Director of Environment at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), stated that Indonesia requires support from the private sector to achieve its ambitious economic growth target of 8%. This goal is part of the five-year development plan initiated by President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Speaking at the "CollaborAction for The Earth" press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, Priyanto emphasized the necessity of private sector involvement since the government's capacity to sustain economic growth is limited to around 7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He highlighted that the government lacks sufficient funds to fully support this growth target, and much of the 8% growth will need to be driven by the private sector. Priyanto further explained that for Indonesia to advance and reach a Gross National Income (GNI) of approximately USD 30,000, leverage from the private sector is essential. Bappenas identifies various potential sectors for private-public collaboration, with a particular focus on the green economy. This model aims to align economic growth with environmental sustainability, including leveraging activities such as waste management to generate alternative energy and recycling products. According to the 2023 National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), 38.21% of the 38.2 million tons of waste remains unmanaged. Priyanto emphasized the importance of balancing sustainability with resource development over the next five years.
