Ministry Targets Boost in Motorcycle Exports to Strengthen Foreign Exchange and Employment

The Ministry of Industry is aiming to increase motorcycle exports annually, a move expected to enhance Indonesia's foreign exchange earnings and stimulate employment. "We anticipate that motorcycle exports will continue to rise, as Indonesia currently ranks 11th globally in two-wheeler exports," said Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza at the Indonesia Motorcycle Show (IMOS) 2024, held in Tangerang, Banten. He emphasized that expanding motorcycle exports not only boosts foreign exchange but also generates jobs across the industry. Over five million workers are involved in the motorcycle sector, from principal manufacturers to supporting industries, with increased exports likely to drive further employment.

According to data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), Indonesia exported 51,944 motorcycles in September 2024, a slight decline from 56,715 units in August. From January to September 2024, total motorcycle exports reached 399,989 units, down from 428,730 in the same period in 2023. Faisol noted the rapid growth in Indonesia's motorcycle industry, including the electric motorcycle segment, where 55 companies now produce around 1.15 million units annually. The current electric motorcycle population in Indonesia has risen to 172,000 units from 116,000 last year. To encourage further adoption, the government has introduced subsidies, offering IDR 7 million discount on electric motorcycle purchases. This initiative, which now includes 22 registered producers, is expected to boost investment, enhance industry productivity, and expand job opportunities.
