Indonesia-EU Trade Partnership Sees Continuous Growth

Indonesia's trade partnership with the European Union (EU) continues to show promising growth, particularly in the agri-food sector. According to data from the EU Commission on Agriculture, the EU is Indonesia's fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching EUR 29.7 billion (IDR 504 trillion) in 2023. EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski highlighted the EU's strong commitment to enhancing collaboration between EU and Indonesian agri-food businesses. “Indonesia is a key market for EU agri-food exports. We plan to initiate free trade negotiations to support business growth and increase consumer access to diverse food options in Indonesia,” he stated on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Retailers Association (APRINDO) noted that sustainability, both in production processes and product characteristics, is becoming a significant factor for Indonesian consumers when purchasing goods. Acting Director General of Plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture, Heri Tri Widarto, also emphasized the vision of food security in Indonesia. “I encourage the EU to create promising opportunities in Indonesia, where we can jointly implement sustainable practices, similar to those already applied by the EU, to achieve food security in Indonesia,” he added. The business forum included various EU member state delegates from industries such as food and beverages, dairy products, and animal feed, while Indonesian associations and institutions like LPPOM and BPOM were present to ensure compliance with market regulations.
