Indonesia Imports Beef Worth IDR 5.87 Trillion

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that Indonesia imported 99.12 thousand tons of beef and buffalo meat from January to September 2024. The value of these imports totaled USD 375.68 million or equivalent to IDR 5.87 trillion, based on an exchange rate of IDR 15,635 per USD as of the close of trading on Friday, October 25, 2024. Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, presented this data during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting in 2024, noting that the three main countries of origin for Indonesia's meat imports are Australia, India, and the United States (US).

The import volume from Australia reached 71.40 thousand tons, valued at USD 244.93 million. Meanwhile, imports from India amounted to 11.89 thousand tons, valued at USD 42.06 million. It's important to note that permits for importing buffalo meat from India were granted only to PT Berdikari and PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI). In the same meeting, the Chief Secretary of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Sarwo Edhy, stated that the total national demand for beef and buffalo meat this year is 774,410 tons, with domestic production expected to reach 488,959 tons. The remaining demand will be met through imports, with supply reaching 100,454 tons as of August 2024, and planned imports for September-December 2024 estimated at 268,324 tons. In June 2024, the government set the import quota for beef and buffalo meat at 270,352 tons, with import approvals reaching 219,244 tons and actual imports amounting to 51,363 tons.
