Indonesia Seeks EU Investment to Strengthen Agricultural Sector

The Indonesian government is inviting European Union (EU) investors to invest in its agricultural sector. Acting Director General of Plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture, Heru Tri Widarto, highlighted Indonesia’s abundant natural resources, particularly in palm oil, rubber, coffee, spices, and cocoa. He emphasized that these commodities present opportunities for collaboration with the EU to enhance food security. "With our rich resources, strategic location, and commitment to sustainable agriculture, Indonesia offers fertile ground for such partnerships," he stated during the EU-Indonesia Agrifood Business Forum in Jakarta, Monday, 28 October 2024. Additionally, the EU could contribute by ensuring a high-quality supply of dairy and beef products, as well as bringing advanced technology to Indonesia’s agricultural production.

Heru encouraged EU businesses and investors to consider Indonesia's promising agricultural landscape, noting that their innovation and sustainable practices are vital for building a resilient agricultural system that benefits both parties. He also mentioned that the Ministry of Agriculture is focused on transforming the food system to provide sustainable, nutritious, and affordable food for all Indonesians. Heru expressed hope that the business forum would explore potential investment opportunities in the food sector, enhancing supply chains, productivity, and market access to meet growing global consumer demands. EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski praised Indonesia's contribution to global food production, accounting for around 5% of total world output, particularly in cereals, fruits, vegetables, and palm oil. He reiterated the EU's commitment to strengthening agrifood cooperation with Indonesia.
