The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported a trade surplus in fishery commodities of USD 3.87 billion from January to September 2024, reflecting a 7.2% increase from the same period last year. Export values in this sector reached USD 4.23 billion, driven by significant growth in August when export volumes reached 1.02 million tons, a 34.2% increase from the same month in 2023. The United States remained Indonesia's leading market for fishery products, contributing USD 1.38 billion, or 32.6% of the total export value. Exports to China and ASEAN nations also saw strong growth, increasing by 7.8% and 18.7%, respectively. Notably, exports to Europe surged by 23.3%, indicating a promising market for Indonesian fishery commodities within the European Union. Key products driving this growth include shrimp, valued at USD 1.18 billion, as well as tuna, cuttlefish, squid, and crab, all of which saw significant demand.
In parallel, Indonesia’s fishery imports decreased by 26.2% to USD 366.98 million, which supported the trade surplus and underscored positive trends in domestic production. To enhance competitiveness, KKP continues expanding market access to traditional markets, such as the European Union and Japan, while exploring new markets in North Africa and South Asia. The government is also prioritizing downstream processing and sustainability efforts, aimed at strengthening Indonesia’s fishery exports over the long term.
