Perbarindo Urges BPR to Become a Pillar of National MSME Development

The Indonesian People's Economic Bank Association (Perbarindo) is encouraging Rural Credit Banks (BPR) and Sharia Rural Credit Banks (BPRS) to play a crucial role in supporting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the nation. Perbarindo’s Chairman, Tedy Alamsyah, emphasized that BPR and BPRS aim to revitalize the economy through the October 1988 policy package (Pakto 88). With the expanded role under the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (P2SK), these banks are expected to strengthen industry resilience and enhance their role in the economy. Alamsyah noted that the close relationship between BPR and MSMEs makes them vital engines in boosting the sector's growth.

During Perbarindo's National Working Meeting and National Seminar, economist Burhanudin Abdullah stressed the importance of BPR's role in Indonesia's economic development, particularly under the new administration's focus on health, education, and housing. He highlighted that BPR is essential to supporting government programs aimed at empowering small businesses and local communities. Economist Iwan J. Aziz echoed this sentiment, calling for greater attention to the role of BPR and BPRS in backing MSMEs, as these enterprises represent a larger segment of the economy than large corporations.
