Indonesian Coffee Exports Continue to Grow, Economic Experts Say Positive Momentum Must Be Maintained

Indonesia's coffee exports have experienced significant growth in the international market, driven by increasing global demand for high-quality coffee. According to the Ministry of Trade, global coffee import trends have grown by 12% over the past five years, and Indonesia has successfully leveraged this momentum to maintain its position as one of the world's leading coffee exporters. Deputy Minister of Trade, Jerry Sambuaga, emphasized the government's commitment to expanding market access for Indonesian coffee through active participation in international trade forums. "We continue to strengthen the sustainable coffee export ecosystem through collaboration between the government, businesses, and global trading partners. This is crucial to sustaining export growth amid increasingly complex global challenges," Jerry said. This effort is further supported by the Ministry of Trade's report, which indicates that by September, Indonesia had concluded 38 trade negotiations, with 17 more in process and 13 under exploration.

In terms of quantity, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's coffee exports from January to September reached 342,220 tons, valued at USD 1.49 billion. In contrast, coffee imports amounted to only 67,650 tons, worth USD 319.84 million, highlighting a positive trade balance for coffee. Gloria Angelita Tomasowa, Head of the Center for Entrepreneurship, Tourism, Information, and Strategy (CENTRIS) at the Sahid University Graduate School, noted that the growth of Indonesia's coffee exports reflects the increasing competitiveness of its products in the international market. Most of Indonesia's coffee exports are shipped to countries like the Philippines (85,000 tons), the United States (31,730 tons), and Malaysia (32,330 tons). Conversely, the largest sources of coffee imports for Indonesia are Vietnam, Brazil, and Malaysia. Gloria added that by focusing on innovation and efficiency, Indonesia could solidify its position as a major player in the global coffee trade. "The continuous growth of Indonesia's coffee exports proves that this sector has great potential to boost the national economy, even amid challenging global conditions," Gloria concluded.
