Customs Escorts 1.2 Tons of Papua Coffee Exports to Japan and the Netherlands

The Customs Office oversaw the inaugural export of 1.2 tons of Papua coffee by the Emas Hijau Papua Cooperative to Japan and the Netherlands from Jayapura Port on Thursday, October 10. Adeltus Lolok, Head of the Jayapura Customs Office, stated that this initial export to Japan and the Netherlands is a continuous effort to expand the market for authentic Papua coffee. Previously, Papua coffee from the Emas Hijau Papua Cooperative was exported to Singapore in November last year. “This coffee shipment is proof that anyone can engage in exports. We will continue to support Papua's SMEs to understand exports, given the vast potential for growth, especially since Papua shares a border with another country, Papua New Guinea,” Adeltus said. Yafet Weitipo, leader of the Emas Hijau Papua Cooperative, explained that this shipment is the first from a 10-ton coffee contract they have signed. “All of this is thanks to the hard work of farmers who are willing to learn and improve quality to meet buyers’ expectations. We also thank all parties and government institutions for their ongoing support, enabling us to export,” Yafet stated.

Faturachman, Head of the Bank Indonesia (BI) Representative Office in Papua Province, identified coffee as a potential export product from Papua. “Coffee has a high multiplier effect on coffee enthusiasts, café owners, and baristas, who all benefit significantly from coffee development in Papua. This can be achieved within the pentahelix business model framework, involving the government, BI, coffee community, academics, business players, and the media,” he added. Yohanes Walilo, Acting Secretary of Papua, noted that Papua coffee has gained significant international recognition and appreciation, not only for its unique and distinctive taste but also for its cultivation process that preserves local wisdom. He believes this inaugural export success is the result of hard work and a strong commitment to continuous growth and market expansion. “We hope this synergy and collaboration will continue to advance sustainable economic growth in Papua,” Yohanes concluded.
