The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) is focusing on the gaming industry as a potential economic powerhouse for Indonesia by targeting the Southeast Asian market. Hokky Situngkir, Director General of Informatics Applications, highlighted during a conference in Kuta, Bali, that Indonesia has emerged as one of the largest gaming markets in Southeast Asia. In 2023, the country's gaming industry generated over USD 1.6 billion in revenue, signaling its growing importance. According to Situngkir, 55.6% of the population plays games, with over 35 million active online gamers, underscoring the sector's deep integration into daily life. He also noted that with the eSports market projected to reach USD 1 billion, Indonesia is poised to lead and compete on the global stage.
One of the key initiatives to strengthen the eSports ecosystem is the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX), held in Kuta from October 10-12, 2024. The event gathers gamers, developers, artists, investors, and government officials, aiming to foster collaboration, deepen knowledge, and create new opportunities in the industry. With more than 1,600 business meetings recorded, the IGDX Developer Conference 2024 is set to advance Indonesia’s gaming industry. Kemenkominfo, in cooperation with other ministries, is committed to building a comprehensive gaming ecosystem by nurturing young talent, enhancing game development studios, providing career information, and organizing international-scale business forums to accelerate the growth of the sector. These efforts aim to improve both the quality and quantity of game developers, ultimately fostering new entrepreneurial opportunities in the gaming industry.
