Minister of Industry: There Are Still Many Opportunities for the Batik Industry to Expand Export Markets

The Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, highlighted the untapped potential of the domestic batik industry to expand its export market and boost its contribution to the national economy. In the second quarter of 2024, batik sector exports totaled only USD 8.33 million. "The batik industry has contributed USD 8.33 million to the export of textiles and textile products (TPT), which is not yet optimal. There are still many opportunities to expand national batik exports," stated Minister Agus during the National Batik Day (HBN) celebration in Jakarta on Wednesday. He emphasized that efforts to advance the national batik export sector are being carried out through various programs involving stakeholders, such as the National Batik Day event in collaboration with the Indonesian Batik Foundation. Initiatives include fostering new entrepreneurs, facilitating Geographical Indications (IG), providing technical production assistance, and facilitating machinery and equipment. "Last year, we facilitated the Geographical Indication for Batik Complongan Indramayu and made it the theme of the 2023 National Batik Exhibition (GBN). Its impact was significant for the local economy and increased consumer awareness of Batik Complongan Indramayu," he added.

To promote Indonesian batik globally, the Ministry encourages wearing batik at official state events and daily activities. As an initial step, the Ministry has implemented wearing batik for four working days a week. The Ministry of Industry reported that the domestic batik industry had absorbed 200,000 workers as of August 2024, spread across 201 industrial centers and 5,946 small and medium industries (IKM) in 11 provinces. These 200,000 workers in the batik craft industry have significantly contributed to Indonesia's export balance, with the quantity for the January-July 2024 period reaching USD 9.45 million. The Minister's remarks underline the need for increased efforts to maximize the potential of the batik industry, leveraging various support mechanisms and promotional strategies to enhance its global competitiveness and economic impact. The domestic batik industry not only preserves cultural heritage but also plays a crucial role in job creation and export growth.
