The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) reported that economic diplomacy has been one of Indonesia’s main pillars over the past decade under President Joko Widodo's leadership. As a result, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows to Indonesia reached USD 50 billion (IDR 759 trillion) in 2023. Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Nugraha Mansury highlighted that economic diplomacy contributed to the growth of FDI, rising from USD 28 billion (IDR 425.1 trillion) in 2014 to USD 50 billion in 2023. “This reflects the success of Indonesia's economic diplomacy in attracting investments into strategic sectors like food, renewable energy, and healthcare,” he remarked during a discussion titled “A Decade of Indonesia’s Diplomacy Facing Global Dynamics,” held in Jakarta on Monday (23/09/2024).
Amid global challenges such as trade wars, protectionism, and geopolitical crises, Indonesia expanded its market access through 27 international trade agreements, opening new markets in Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Additionally, Indonesia has successfully resolved 218,323 cases involving Indonesian citizens abroad over the last decade, ranging from human trafficking victims to those impacted by natural disasters or conflicts. Mansury emphasized that the ministry has bolstered legal infrastructure, industrial technology, and human resources within foreign embassies to enhance services for the 8-9 million Indonesians residing abroad, successfully repatriating 18,022 citizens from conflict and disaster zones.
