Indonesia, through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/Agency for Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf), has endorsed the Belém Declaration, an agreement reached by Tourism Ministers and representatives of the G20 during the "G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting" in Brazil. This support reflects Indonesia's commitment to advancing global tourism and achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were the focus of the G20 discussions and the Belém Declaration. Martini M. Paham, Deputy of Resources and Institutions at Kemenparekraf, who attended the meeting in Belém on 21 September 2024, expressed Indonesia's commitment to Brazil’s efforts and the G20 countries to promote sustainable tourism. To accelerate SDG progress, tourism also requires collaboration with other sectors, especially culture and the economy, since the SDGs encompass economic and social dimensions beyond environmental concerns.
The Belém Declaration outlines six main pillars: Tourism and Sustainability, G20 Tourism Dashboard, Human Resource Development, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Tourism, Sustainable Tourism Investment, and Cooperation and Concrete Actions for the Future. These align with the five pillars of the G20 Bali Guidelines, introduced during Indonesia’s 2022 presidency. Martini noted that Indonesia presented six flagship programs accessible globally via the G20 Tourism Dashboard, including sustainable destination guides and the International Tourism Investment Forum. She also emphasized the importance of further discussing culture and creative economy’s role in tourism during South Africa’s G20 Presidency next year. Minister of Tourism Sandiaga praised the G20’s commitment to the Belém Declaration, emphasizing innovation, adaptation, and collaboration as key to building a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous world.
