China and Indonesia have entered a new partnership in green energy through a waste-to-energy (PSEL) project in Makassar. The USD 200 million (1 USD = IDR 15,191), or approximately IDR 3 trillion investment, aims to tackle urban waste issues while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The agreement was signed by the Makassar City Government and Shanghai SUS Environment Co. Ltd. on 24 September at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs office in Jakarta. This National Strategic Project (PSN) will not only address waste management in Makassar but also produce clean energy. The facility will have a combustion capacity of 1,300 tons per day, with two incineration lines of 2x650 tons per day and a steam generator unit of 1x35 MW. The project is expected to commence operations by the end of 2026 with an investment of USD 200 million, equivalent to IDR 3 trillion.
China's investment will contribute to the regional economy by creating new jobs and fostering the development of related industrial sectors. Makassar Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto expressed his excitement, noting that the project had been in the works for some time. He hopes that the groundbreaking will take place by the end of 2024. Shanghai SUS Environment CTO Jiao XueJun emphasized that the waste-to-energy plant will serve as a model for environmental protection and benefit the Indonesian people. The collaboration strengthens China and Indonesia's partnership in green energy and environmental protection, marking a significant achievement under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
