The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that Papua's exports saw a significant rise of 174.56% in August 2024, reaching a total value of USD 9,367.27 million, up from USD 3,411.78 million in July. Head of BPS Papua, Adriana Helena Carolina, in Jayapura on Tuesday, explained that the increase was driven by both oil and gas (migas) and non-oil and gas (nonmigas) exports. "In August, Papua's exports consisted of USD 5.41 million in oil and gas and USD 9,361.86 million in non-oil and gas," she stated. Key non-oil and gas export items included wood and wood products (HS44) valued at USD 9,046.91 million, fish and aquatic animals (HSO3) at USD 19.01 million, and other non-oil and gas exports at USD 295.94 million.
Cumulatively, Papua's total exports from January to August 2024 amounted to USD 51,721.84 million, marking an increase of 1007% compared to USD 46,988.65 million for the same period in 2023. Carolina also highlighted that Papua’s exports, shipped through external ports like Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, amounted to USD 6,098.33 million in August. Assistant for Economic and Public Welfare Affairs, Setyo Wahyudi, added that although most exports from Papua currently go through Surabaya, efforts are being made to improve and address the challenges faced in direct exports. "We will continue to push for more exports via ports and airports in Papua to enhance the economic benefits for the local population," he concluded.
