Indonesia is set to import 100,000 dairy cows from Brazil to boost domestic milk production. This initiative is based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PT Asiabeef Biofarma Indonesia (Asiabeef) and Agropecuaria 31 (31 Group), initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan). The agreement was reached during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman and Brazilian Minister of Agriculture Carlos Favaro in Chapada Dos Guimaraes, Brazil, on Thursday (12/9). According to Amran, the investment from this collaboration is estimated to reach IDR 4.5 trillion. Amran stated that the presence of Brazilian investors could support efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in beef and milk production in Indonesia. He expressed his hope that Indonesia could meet its protein needs for beef and milk domestically rather than through imports. To achieve this goal, Indonesia needs to develop livestock farming on a large scale. "All this investment will create new jobs in various fields of livestock," Amran added.
The Indonesia-Brazil bilateral meeting took place immediately after Amran attended the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting (AMM). During the meeting, Brazilian Minister of Agriculture Carlos Favaro stated that he would visit Indonesia soon and promised to bring several major entrepreneurs in the livestock sector. The expected visit aims to establish further agreements on the development of the livestock sector in Indonesia. The collaborative efforts between Indonesia and Brazil are anticipated to enhance the dairy and meat production capabilities of Indonesia, potentially reducing the reliance on imports and promoting local agriculture.
