The utilization of digital technology in Indonesia's economy has the potential to reach USD 360 billion, equivalent to IDR 5.5 trillion, according to Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi. He highlighted that this significant opportunity could be realized if society maximizes the rapidly advancing digital technology. Indonesia’s demographic bonus, particularly its tech-savvy youth, is expected to drive this growth. "This provides an opportunity for significant economic development, especially as the younger generation becomes increasingly familiar with digital platforms," Budi Arie stated during the launch of the Indonesian Digital Society Index (IMDI) in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 September 2024.
However, he acknowledged several challenges in harnessing digital technology’s full potential, such as the spread of negative content and the digital literacy gap. These issues could hinder the optimization of the benefits of digital technology. "For example, there are threats of negative and provocative content, as well as the digital literacy and skills gap, which can impede the full utilization of digital spaces," he explained.
