Indonesian Energy Minister Bahlil Highlights Coal Downstreaming for Energy Transition

Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, urged coal producers to align the use of coal as a key commodity with the value-adding downstreaming program. This initiative is expected to help the government achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2060. Speaking at the Coaltrans Asia 2024 event in Bali on Monday (9/9/2024), Bahlil affirmed that the government continues to support coal as one of the primary commodities while stressing the importance of a gradual energy transition. “I want to assure you that the government will continue to promote coal as a key commodity alongside the ongoing energy transition,” Bahlil stated.

He further emphasized that coal producers must secure adequate capital as an instrument to facilitate the shift towards green technology. “Without sufficient capital, it will be impossible to enforce this transition,” he said. Bahlil highlighted that like other nations striving to foster growth without disregarding the global consensus on emission reductions, Indonesia is committed to gradually achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. He called on coal producers to enhance the added value of coal through downstreaming, while still adhering to environmental standards and governance norms, warning that the country cannot continue its reliance on coal indefinitely.
