Indonesian Ministry of Energy Accelerates CCS/CCUS Technology Development for Net Zero Emissions

The Human Resource Development Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (BPSDM ESDM) is actively promoting the advancement and utilization of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. In a statement on Monday, Prahoro Nurtjahyo, Head of BPSDM ESDM, reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. The energy sector's strategy to meet this target includes the expansion of renewable energy, energy conservation initiatives, and the adoption of clean technologies such as CCS/CCUS. To support this, BPSDM ESDM hosted a focus group discussion (FGD) titled "Towards Net Zero Emissions: Indonesian Project Development of CCS and CCUS" in Jakarta on 29 August 2024, attended by key energy stakeholders.

Prahoro emphasized that climate change is a global challenge requiring urgent and collaborative action. As part of its strategic efforts, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources aims to have the majority of its 15 CCS/CCUS projects operational by 2030. With a storage potential of 577.62 gigatons, Indonesia is positioned as one of the world's largest carbon storage hubs. CCS and CCUS technologies are crucial in capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial processes and power plants, preventing its release into the atmosphere. These technologies enable lower-emission fossil fuel use, supporting a transition to a low-carbon economy without compromising energy security. However, the implementation of CCS/CCUS in Indonesia faces challenges such as the need for significant investment, regulatory support, and the adaptation of existing resources and equipment.
