Ministry of Industry Reports Manufacturing Sector Employs 18.82 Million Workers

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) reports that the national manufacturing industry continues to grow, employing 18.82 million people as of June 2024. From January to June 2024, the manufacturing sector accounted for three-quarters of total exports, generating over USD 9 billion in export revenue. The sector also made the largest contribution to Indonesia's economy, with the non-oil and gas manufacturing sector representing 17.47% of GDP and a growth rate of 4.64% in Q2 2024. Furthermore, manufacturing contributed 26.9% to tax revenue, and investments in the sector amounted to over IDR 150 trillion, equivalent to 38.73% of total investments. The implementation of Industry 4.0 has positively impacted sustainability by enhancing resource efficiency, minimizing waste, and reducing environmental impact, promoting closed-loop product life cycles and industrial symbiosis. At the micro level, Industry 4.0 enables manufacturing processes to become more adaptive, efficient, and environmentally friendly, optimizing resource use and improving worker welfare. The model integrates sustainability as a core element, encouraging long-term competitiveness and positive social and environmental impacts. Decentralized management allows for dynamic allocation of resources according to specific needs, further enhancing efficiency. The selection of Industry 4.0 'lighthouse' industries also considers sustainability criteria, aiming to balance economic growth with social and environmental benefits. The ongoing Indonesia 4.0 Conference and Expo 2024 highlights these developments and emphasizes the importance of creating a sustainable, competitive, and innovative manufacturing sector in Indonesia.
