The policy spearheaded by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, to develop various Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the regions has been praised as a strategic move. According to CSIS Executive Director Yose Rizal Damuri, the decision to position the Riau Islands (Kepri) as an investment gateway and a driving force for Indonesia's economic growth has proven successful. This success is evident from Kepri's economic performance, which saw a 4.9% growth in Q2 2024. Damuri noted that the operational SEZs in Kepri have significantly contributed to regional revenue, establishing a new economic base both locally and nationally.
Geographically, Kepri is highly suitable as an investment gateway, further bolstered by various privileges granted by the central government. Damuri highlighted the presence of free trade zones and several SEZs as key pillars for accelerating development. These facilities are expected to attract more investors to the SEZs. The impact of these initiatives is anticipated not only in Kepri but also in other regions. Damuri emphasized the importance of continued support from local governments, including providing the best services to investors. He stressed the need for comprehensive support, not just in infrastructure but also in energy supply, which is crucial for setting up factories and machinery in the SEZs.
