Batik, recognized by UNESCO as a significant form of art and craftsmanship, is not only a treasured cultural heritage of Indonesia but also a promising economic asset. In celebration of the 57th ASEAN Anniversary, the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, in collaboration with the Warisan Budaya Indonesia (WBI) Foundation, presented "Batik Collaboration: Indonesia's Gift to ASEAN" in Jakarta on August 27. This event, attended by representatives from various countries, showcased collaborative batik that will adorn the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta. The collaborative batik features three motifs — Batik Lumbon Sewelas Nagari, Batik Udan Liris Sewelas Nagari, and Batik Sekar Jagad Sewelas Nagari — symbolizing unity among ASEAN countries. These designs incorporate classical batik motifs blended with the rich flora of ASEAN member states, creating a beautiful harmony of colors and forms. Each motif carries a deep philosophical meaning: Sekar Jagad Sewelas Nagari represents the beauty of cultural diversity, Udan Liris Sewelas Nagari symbolizes shared hopes for a better future, and Lumbon Sewelas Nagari reflects the harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. The batik was crafted by senior artisan Nur Cahyo from Pekalongan and young batik maker Azmi Alqamad Aqsa, highlighting both traditional expertise and the aspirations of the younger generation. The event also offered a platform for Indonesian designers and local MSMEs to promote and sell their creations, paving the way for batik to compete globally and appeal to a wider audience. The initiative underscored batik's role in driving the creative economy, with support from the government, artisans, and industry players.
