The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), in collaboration with the Japanese government, has initiated the construction of the Integrated Marine and Fisheries Center (SKPT) in Sabang, Aceh. This initiative aims to stimulate the fisheries economy in Indonesia's westernmost regions. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on 26 August 2024, led by Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, who highlighted the importance of sustainable management of the abundant marine and fisheries resources in these outer regions. The SKPT Fisheries Port will serve as a comprehensive marine and fisheries business hub, particularly in Indonesia's outer islands and border areas. The port is designed to enhance the local economy by focusing on the fisheries sector, providing facilities for small-scale fishermen, including cold storage and ice production units. The project is also part of the broader national strategy to implement a "measured fishing" program, contributing to the sustainable management of the country’s fisheries.
Supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project includes not only infrastructure development but also training and technical seminars for local communities and port managers. JICA’s Representative, Sachiko Tadeka, emphasized that this initiative aims to bring significant benefits to coastal communities by improving their livelihoods through higher value-added fisheries products and better distribution channels. The KKP's commitment to this project aligns with Indonesia’s blue economy policy, which seeks to balance biological, ecological, social, and economic aspects in marine management. The successful completion of the SKPT port is expected to modernize local fisheries, enhance environmental sustainability, and contribute to the economic prosperity of Sabang and surrounding areas.
