Merauke Crabs Enter Singapore Market, Boosting Local Economy

South Papua's Quarantine Service, through the Mopah Airport Unit, has successfully facilitated the export of Merauke crabs to Singapore, marking a significant achievement for the local economy. This export not only supports the livelihoods of local crab fishermen but also highlights the competitiveness of Papua's natural resources on the international stage. According to Cahyono, Head of South Papua Quarantine, the large size of Merauke crabs has attracted considerable interest from Singaporean consumers. The South Papua Quarantine Service ensured the crabs met health and quality standards by conducting thorough inspections and issuing Health Certificates. Liswiyanto, a Fish Disease Control Technician, reported that 604 crabs were inspected and found to be free from White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). All crabs met the export criteria, which include a carapace width of over 12 cm and a weight exceeding 150 grams, as stipulated by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 7 of 2024. This successful export underscores the growing demand for Merauke crabs in the international market, further boosting the economic prospects for local communities.
