The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has highlighted that salt produced in Sabu Raijua Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, meets export quality standards despite being traditionally processed. Victor Gustaaf Manoppo, Director General of Marine and Coastal Management, stated that the salt from Sabu Raijua, with a NaCl content of 98.23%, is of premium quality and comparable to imported salt. He emphasized that although production methods are traditional, the quality is top-notch.
Sabu Raijua Regency has a potential salt area of 2,015 hectares spread across six districts. The use of geomembrane technology and the region’s semi-arid climate, which features a long dry season, greatly supports salt production. Victor noted the need to enhance salt management through land mapping, marketing improvements, better institutional frameworks, and more efficient production systems to boost the local economy and create job opportunities. Additionally, the Director of Marine Services mentioned that the salt production in Sabu Raijua could reach up to 300,000 tons per year, potentially supporting the marine sector's economy in the region. With favorable local climate conditions and trained local workers, there is potential for expanding salt farming operations.
