Negotiations for a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are in the final stages, with the agreement's text currently being finalized. Mikael Agasandyan, Director of the First Department of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), confirmed that the fifth round of consultations between Indonesia and the EAEU took place at the end of July, with both parties working to complete the draft agreement. The EAEU, an economic union initiated by five CIS members—Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Belarus—has been in discussions with Indonesia to strengthen trade ties.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto to discuss various issues, including trade relations between the two countries. During the meeting, President Putin emphasized the significant role that the upcoming free trade agreement between the EAEU and Indonesia will play in enhancing bilateral trade between Russia and Indonesia. The successful completion of this agreement is expected to open new opportunities for trade, boosting economic cooperation between Indonesia and the EAEU member states. This development highlights Indonesia's strategic efforts to expand its trade network globally, further integrating into the international economy.
