Indonesia Proposes 34 Energy Transition Projects

The Indonesian government has proposed 34 energy transition projects at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) 2024 ministerial meeting in Jakarta, seeking funding from Japan. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that Indonesia has submitted the largest number of projects this year, highlighting the country’s commitment to clean energy. "Indonesia has the largest shortlist with 34 projects. These projects fall under the Asia Zero Emission Community, led by Indonesia and Japan," Airlangga noted on 21 August. The AZEC meeting saw the participation of multiple member countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, and Australia, each proposing their energy transition initiatives. From the 78 projects submitted by these countries, potential projects have been categorized based on their readiness.

Category I includes commercial projects ready for implementation, such as the Muara Laboh geothermal project and the Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Plant. Category II comprises potential projects nearing commercialization but still undergoing feasibility studies, including peatland management and the Java-Sumatra transmission network. Category III consists of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and initiatives requiring further identification and study, with the goal of advancing them to Category II and Category I. Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya Listiani Dewi, mentioned that last year, Indonesia submitted 120 energy transition projects to AZEC. However, only the Muara Laboh geothermal and Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Plant projects were prioritized. The AZEC meeting also marked the inauguration of the AZEC Center in Indonesia, hosted by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in Jakarta, serving as a regional collaboration hub for decarbonization efforts.
