Palestine Seeks to Strengthen Bilateral Trade Ties with Indonesia

Palestine is actively working to enhance bilateral trade relations with Indonesia, as revealed by Riyad Al-Maliki, Special Advisor to the Palestinian President, following a series of meetings with Indonesian government representatives in Jakarta on 19 August 2024. Al-Maliki expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s consistent support against Israeli occupation and expressed confidence that Indonesia’s pro-Palestine stance will remain strong under the leadership of President-elect Prabowo Subianto. "Indonesia, with its rich cultural heritage, dynamic economy, and strategic role on the international stage, has always been a valuable partner and cherished friend to Palestine," Al-Maliki stated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta. Al-Maliki emphasized Palestine's intention to expand trade with Indonesia. The two countries have discussed several initiatives to strengthen their relationship, particularly in the area of trade, which Al-Maliki described as "crucial" for Palestine.

According to data from Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the trade value between Indonesia and Palestine saw a significant increase, rising from USD 2.1 million in 2022 to USD 4.3 million in 2023. In the first half of 2024, the trade value reached USD 2.3 million, slightly lower than the USD 2.8 million recorded during the same period in the previous year. Interestingly, BPS data also shows that Indonesia’s trade with Israel, despite the lack of diplomatic relations, was notably higher, with a trade value of USD 187.7 million in 2023, down from USD 233 million in the previous year. On 19 August 2024, Al-Maliki also awarded President Joko Widodo the "Grand Collar Order of the State of Palestine," the highest honor the Palestinian government bestows on foreign dignitaries. This prestigious award has previously been given to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
