Sabu Raijua Salt Production Achieves Export-Grade Quality

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has highlighted that salt produced in Sabu Raijua Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, meets export-quality standards, despite being produced using traditional methods. Victor Gustaaf Manoppo, Director General of Marine and Coastal Resource Management, emphasized that salt production in Sabu Raijua could be expanded to meet national salt demand. "Even though it is produced traditionally, Sabu Raijua salt boasts top-grade quality with a NaCl content of 98.23%, comparable to imported salt," Victor stated in a KKP press release in Jakarta on Monday. He added that Sabu Raijua has a potential salt production area of 2,015 hectares across six districts, benefiting from geomembrane technology and a semi-arid climate with an extended dry season, which is ideal for salt production.

To optimize this potential, Victor suggested enhancing land mapping, marketing systems, organizational structures, and production processes to boost the local economy and create job opportunities. Additionally, the Director of Marine Services mentioned that Sabu Raijua’s salt production potential could reach 300,000 tons annually. With proper management, this output could significantly support the maritime economy in the region. "The use of full geomembrane technology ensures the highest quality salt in Indonesia, making it suitable for both domestic and international industries," he noted. The region’s favorable climate and the community’s expertise in salt farming also provide opportunities for expanding salt pond operations, further enhancing production capabilities.
