The Wakatobi Regency Government in Southeast Sulawesi officially launched its first seafood export. This initiative is the result of collaboration between the Padalleang Sama Cooperative, the Wakatobi Regency Government through the Fisheries Department, and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia. The export, consisting of 7 tons of octopus, is being shipped from a portable cold storage facility to Japan via Makassar, transported by a frozen goods vehicle. Wakatobi Regent Haliana highlighted that this achievement stems from communication with the KKP. Last year, the cooperative received a portable freezing facility from KKP, which significantly supported its activities, enabling this export. Haliana also mentioned the abundant variety and stock of fishery products in Wakatobi, expressing hope for further development in the future, especially with the financial independence goal set by new laws governing financial relations between local governments and the central government.
Haliana emphasized that the region should not solely rely on central government transfers but should explore its potential to enhance local financial capabilities, particularly through its resources. He called for continued prayers and efforts to boost these activities, aiming to create new sources of local revenue that would contribute to the region's progress and ensure its financial independence. The success of this first export, he hopes, will be a stepping stone toward greater achievements and economic growth in Wakatobi. Haliana urged the Fisheries Department to continue providing guidance and support to local cooperatives, ensuring that their operations expand and have a more significant impact on the community and local fisheries.
