Indonesia Exports the Most Copper to China

China is currently one of Indonesia's main trading partners, accounting for about a quarter of Indonesia's total exports. Key export products to China include natural gas, coal, and palm oil, along with copper. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia exported 684.35 thousand tons of copper ore to China out of a total of 2.9 million tons, representing over 20% of the national copper export weight. The value of these exports reached USD 1.86 billion in 2023. Japan is another significant destination for Indonesia's copper exports, with 654.24 thousand tons exported in 2023, valued at USD 1.88 billion. Both China and Japan are major players in Indonesia's copper export market. Overall, Indonesia's copper exports have been steadily increasing over the years, reflecting the government's commitment to sustaining this mineral resource. Although there was a notable drop in 2019, exports rebounded significantly, especially after the pandemic, reaching a peak in 2022 with a net export weight of 3.13 million tons.

China is not only a key market for copper but also for Indonesia's tin and seaweed exports. In November 2023, Indonesia exported 25.08 million kilograms of tin to China, and seaweed exports reached 220.71 thousand tons, making up 87.9% of the national total. The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) of Indonesia remains optimistic that exports to China will further increase in 2024, aided by initiatives like the Two Countries Twin Pack (TCTP) collaboration, which includes showcasing Indonesian products in the Fujian and Guangzhou provinces. Indonesia's export value to China was USD 60 billion in 2023, with projections to rise to USD 70 billion in 2024. On the import side, Indonesia's non-oil and gas imports from China reached USD 32.45 billion in the first half of 2024, up 8.21% year-on-year, making China Indonesia's largest non-oil and gas import partner. Key imported products include nuclear reactors, electrical machinery, iron, plastics, organic chemicals, and furniture. Maintaining strong trade relations with China is crucial for Indonesia's economic growth, especially as China's economy shows signs of recovery, which could also benefit Indonesia by boosting foreign exchange earnings and attracting foreign investment.
