Great! Indonesia's Tuna Exports to Japan Now Duty-Free

Indonesia's tuna exports and certain related products have recently gained duty-free access to Japan, a development expected to enhance the competitiveness and investment potential of Indonesia's tuna industry. Budi Sulistiyo, Director General of Product Competitiveness Strengthening at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), announced that four tariff lines have been granted 0% import duty in Japan. These products include Skipjack and other bonito in airtight containers, Tuna in airtight containers, boiled and dried Skipjack and bonito, and other related products. This exemption was formalized through the signing of the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA) protocol on August 8, 2024.

In addition to these four products, Indonesia has secured a 0% tariff for 67 other fishery products, including frozen yellowfin tuna, fresh tilapia fillets, frozen swordfish fillets, and processed lobster, all destined for the Japanese market. These agreements, set to be implemented following ratification by both countries' parliaments, are expected to significantly boost Indonesia's seafood exports. Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, has declared 2024 as the "Year of Tuna," aiming to strengthen Indonesia's seafood branding as safe, eco-friendly, and sustainable, further enhancing market access and benefits for Indonesia globally. The protocol also broadens market access for various Indonesian goods and services, with Japan set to improve market access for 112 Indonesian products, while Indonesia will reciprocate for 25 Japanese products, including steel, iron, and automotive goods. The IJEPA changes are projected to increase Indonesia's exports to Japan by an average of 11.6% annually from 2024 to 2033, with the total export value expected to reach USD 35.9 billion by 2028, a 58% rise from 2023.
