Foreign Tourist Spending in Italy Reaches EUR 5.2 Billion

Foreign tourists in Italy are outspending Italian travelers abroad, with expenditures continuing to rise in the early months of 2024. According to a survey by the Bank of Italy on international tourism, this trend resulted in a EUR 2.8 billion surplus in Italy's tourism balance of payments by the end of May, up from EUR 2.2 billion in the same month of 2023. Foreign visitor spending in Italy reached EUR 5.2 billion, marking a 17% increase in the first five months of 2024. In contrast, Italian travelers spent EUR 2.4 billion abroad, reflecting a 9% rise.
Over the three months leading up to May 2024, tourism revenue increased by 12% compared to the same period in 2023, driven by higher per capita spending. On the other hand, the 9% increase in outbound spending was solely due to a higher number of travelers. For the first time since the summer of 2021, spending by tourists from EU countries outpaced that of non-EU visitors, with respective increases of 13% and 10% compared to the previous year. Italian spending also saw a greater rise in European destinations. This positive trend underscores Italy's growing appeal to international tourists and its significant impact on the national economy.
