Mangrove crabs from Belitung, located in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, have successfully entered the Singaporean market, supplying prestigious restaurants and luxury hotels in the "Lion City." Darsono, a mangrove crab entrepreneur from Belitung, confirmed on Monday in Tanjung Pandan that while the crabs are not exported directly, they are first sent to a supplier in Jakarta, then to Batam, before reaching Singapore via sea routes. The volume of crab shipments from Belitung to Singapore varies depending on the season. During peak season, from September to April, shipments can exceed 100 kilograms per batch, while in normal conditions, they typically range between 50 to 60 kilograms. The most sought-after crabs are those weighing between 700 grams to 1 kilogram, sold at prices ranging from IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 per kilogram, with all crabs being delivered alive.
Rekie Irawan, Head of Aquaculture at the Belitung Fisheries Department, highlighted the significant potential of Belitung’s mangrove crab industry. With an extensive coastline and lush mangrove forests, Belitung offers an ideal habitat for these crabs, providing opportunities not only for local consumption but also for exports. The growing demand from Singapore underscores the promising future of Belitung’s mangrove crab industry, which continues to expand its reach into international markets.
