The National Food Agency (Bapanas) announced that Indonesia is currently exporting red onions to Thailand to help maintain stable prices for local farmers. This initiative was revealed by Bapanas Head Arief Prasetyo Adi during the Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting in Jakarta on Monday, August 5, 2024. Arief mentioned that exports are carried out after ensuring that domestic demand for red onions is satisfied, with national production reaching 1.9 million tons and domestic consumption at around 1.1 million tons. The exported red onions are sourced from local farmers, including those in Bima, Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), and the procurement is facilitated by state-owned enterprises in the food sector. Once collected, these red onions are stored before being exported, with shipments managed through ports in Jakarta. This move ensures that the surplus production does not lead to a drop in prices at the farmer level, thus supporting the local agricultural economy.
