During the inauguration of PT Indonesia BDR New Energy Material’s anode material factory in Kendal, Central Java, on Wednesday, 7 August, President Joko Widodo expressed his pride in Indonesia's nickel export value reaching USD 34 billion, up from IDR 33 trillion. This significant increase showcases the government's dedication to building an electric vehicle ecosystem. Despite challenges such as the nickel export ban, which sparked controversy and resulted in a legal defeat against the European Union, President Jokowi reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to its national interests and sovereignty. He emphasized the nation's resolve to avoid external pressures dictating its policies.
The President also commended PT Indonesia BDR New Energy Material for producing 80,000 tons of anode material annually. This achievement aligns with Indonesia's broader goal of becoming a major supplier of materials and components for electric vehicles. Jokowi remains optimistic about Indonesia's potential to be a leading supplier of electric vehicle batteries and the vehicles themselves. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to develop a robust and integrated electric vehicle ecosystem, leveraging local resources such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese. In summary, Indonesia's remarkable growth in nickel exports to USD 34 billion marks a milestone in the country’s journey towards establishing a comprehensive and self-sustaining electric vehicle industry. President Jokowi's remarks underscore the importance of national sovereignty, the value of local resources, and the strategic focus on future technologies.
