Indonesia Aims to Become Top Coconut Exporter with New Exports from Lampung

On 3 August 2024, Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan launched the export of processed coconut products from PT Sari Segar Husada, valued at USD 1.50 million (IDR 25.30 billion). These products, set for markets in Australia, China, the Netherlands, and Tanzania, mark a significant step in Indonesia’s coconut industry. Minister Hasan emphasized Indonesia's vast potential in coconut production and expressed confidence that with serious management, Indonesia could become the world's leading coconut exporter. "I am proud to oversee the export of processed coconut products to these international markets. If we handle this potential with greater seriousness, Indonesia's coconut exports could expand significantly," Hasan stated. The event in Lampung was attended by various officials, including the Acting Governor of Lampung Province, Samsudin, and the Head of the Lampung Industry and Trade Office, Evie Fatmawaty. Hasan was joined by acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Trade, Suhanto, and the acting Director-General of National Export Development, Mardyana Listyowati.

Hasan highlighted the need for research to enhance horticultural commodities such as coconut, cocoa, coffee, pepper, and cloves. He suggested that developing superior seeds through research and creating regional clusters could maximize the quality of these products. "We should establish research institutions to produce high-quality seeds and form clusters, like Lampung for coconuts," he said. Additionally, Hasan stressed the importance of training farmers in optimal cultivation practices. He praised PT Sari Segar Husada and its employees for their role in advancing Lampung's economy and called for continued government support to further enhance the industry. Indonesia remains the world’s second-largest coconut producer, with a production capacity of 2.8 million tons per year. From January to May 2024, coconut exports totaled USD 564.38 million, a 4.45% increase from the previous year, with major markets including China, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the United States, and Sri Lanka.
