Indonesia Prepares to Export Red Onions to Thailand and Vietnam Amid Surplus

Arief Prasetyo Adi, Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), announced that Indonesia is ready to start exporting red onions to neighboring countries due to an excess in domestic stock. Arief stated that red onions are a key export commodity for Indonesia. Once local consumption needs are met, surplus stock will be directed towards international markets. During a visit to a red onion warehouse in Brebes, Central Java, on 4 August 2024, Arief highlighted that preparations are underway for exporting to Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. "Currently, red onions are being prepared for export with specific standards. This is excellent news. In Brebes, grading and sorting are being adjusted to meet export specifications," he said.

The process involves preparing up to seven containers per week, with up to 200 workers dedicated to grading to meet export requirements. Arief praised the quality of Indonesian red onions and their international demand, commending the Ministry of Agriculture and local farmers for their efforts. Additionally, Bapanas has established commitments with red onion buyers, reaching a total of 12,500 tons. This initiative involves collaboration with state-owned enterprises and regional governments to ensure a steady supply and meet export goals. This development reflects Indonesia's growing role in the global onion market and highlights the country’s ability to leverage agricultural surpluses for economic gain.
