Temanggung Coffee Exports Surge, Boosting SMEs in Central Java

Temanggung Regency has emerged as the leading coffee export hub in Central Java, followed by Wonogiri and Kendal. According to Eddy S. Bramiyanto, Head of the Central Java Cooperative, Small and Medium Enterprises (Dinkop UKM) Agency, the growth in the coffee industry has positively impacted local farmers. They have not only enhanced the quality of their coffee beans for domestic markets but also met increasing international demand. In recent years, coffee export volumes have seen significant growth, with 2021 recording 17.7 thousand tons valued at USD 64 million. Although data for 2023 is yet to be published, the upward trend continues. Efforts to support coffee-producing SMEs include rigorous curation processes and facilitating partnerships between farmers and international buyers. Notably, potential collaborations with Japanese buyers are underway, with plans to establish direct business-to-business relationships.
Eddy emphasized the importance of elevating local SMEs to export their products. Currently, around 350 SMEs under the agency's guidance export their goods to various countries, with the United States being a major market. Recent agreements with the U.S. alone are valued at approximately IDR 15 billion. These initiatives highlight the region's commitment to boosting the coffee industry's contribution to the local economy and supporting the growth of SMEs in Central Java. The focus on quality and international partnerships is expected to further enhance the global presence of Central Java's coffee sector.
