The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) highlighted the significant potential for exporting medicinal plants, with export values exceeding USD 90 million or IDR 1.468 trillion in 2023. "The potential is extraordinary. Indonesia is known as the Mother of Spices, being the most dominant spice producer in Southeast Asia," stated Andi Muhammad Aidil Fitri, SE, MM., Director of Vegetables and Medicinal Plants at the Ministry of Agriculture, in a recorded message received by RRI on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
In his statement, he revealed that Indonesia's exported medicinal plant commodities include cardamom, turmeric, ginger, and curcuma. Ginger and cardamom have the highest export demand. In 2023, Indonesia exported 36,859,912 kg of ginger, equivalent to USD 28,404,717. Export destinations include Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, and Singapore. Additionally, 21,266,248 kg of cardamom were exported, equivalent to USD 65,555,225, with the highest export volumes going to China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Korea.
