Significant Export Potential for Indonesian Jengkol in International Markets

Jengkol, despite its distinctive and pungent aroma, holds substantial potential for international export. This Multi-Purpose Tree Species (MPTS) is valued for its rich content of plant-based proteins and essential amino acids, and is believed to help with various health issues such as gastritis, anemia, and diabetes. As such, it is gaining traction in global markets. In 2020, Indonesian jengkol exports reached USD 4.7 million, with initial shipments managed by companies including PT Sungwon Indojaya, PT Maruna Meugah Mulia, and PT Dahara Cipta Mandiri. The following year saw further expansion, with West Sumatra exporting 100 kilograms to Japan and West Java sending 50 kilograms to Dubai through the One Pesantren One Product (OPOP) program.

Several countries present significant opportunities for increasing jengkol exports from Indonesia. Japan, for example, has a potential export value estimated at USD 6.7 million, and actual exports have already reached USD 12 million. Similarly, South Korea's potential market stands at USD 892,000, with current exports at USD 23,000, while Australia represents a potential export value of USD 359,000, with actual exports at USD 21,000. Belgium and Germany also show promise, with potential export values of USD 350,000 and USD 224,000 respectively, and actual exports of USD 167,000 and USD 3,100. These figures underline the growing international demand for jengkol and highlight the significant opportunities for expanding its global market presence.
