Balikpapan Ready to Become a Creative Economy Hub: Welcoming the Nusantara Capital Era

Balikpapan, traditionally recognized as an industrial and service hub, faces significant challenges and opportunities with the establishment of the new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), in Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kartanegara. This development positions Balikpapan as a crucial gateway, necessitating readiness for substantial changes. The creative economy sector becomes vital as part of the city's long-term development strategy, encompassing sectors that rely on individual creativity, skills, and talent to produce high-value goods and services, including arts, design, music, film, and digital content. Cokorda Ratih Kusuma, Head of the Youth, Sports, and Tourism Office (Disporapar) of Balikpapan, noted the positive impact of the creative economy on the local economy through job creation and investment attraction. Significant growth has been observed in subsectors such as handicrafts, graphic design, local film production, and music, with content creators supporting tourism promotion. The new capital's development will bring demographic changes, including population growth and increased infrastructure and service needs. To seize this momentum, the city government has launched strategic initiatives, including training programs for SMEs in the creative sector to equip entrepreneurs with business management, digital marketing, and product development skills.

Ratih emphasized that investment in creativity will have a long-term positive impact, stating that the creative economy has immense potential to support the city's economic growth by creating jobs and enhancing the city's image and investment appeal. The city government provides technical assistance and facilities to support entrepreneurs, particularly those just starting. Additionally, the government is committed to strengthening infrastructure to support the creative economy. The collaboration between the private and public sectors, along with strategic initiatives and infrastructure development, positions Balikpapan to become a center for creative activities, attracting industry players and visitors alike. With this approach, Balikpapan aims to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the new capital and drive long-term economic growth through the creative economy.
