President Joko Widodo has approved the establishment of four new Special Economic Zones (KEK) in Indonesia. These include Edutek Medika Internasional in Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), Nipa in the Riau Islands, International Health Tourism Batam in the Riau Islands, and Green Industry Bungku in Central Sulawesi. The legal framework for these zones is currently being formalized through a Government Regulation. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto confirmed the approval, emphasizing the ongoing process to establish the necessary legal provisions. Edutek Medika Internasional in BSD will focus on becoming a center for digital economy research, technology development, education, and healthcare. This initiative, led by PT Surya Inter Wisesa, a subsidiary of PT Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), aims to enhance Indonesia's capability in these sectors. Monash University has already set up operations in the area, and international-standard hospitals are planned to reduce the need for Indonesians to seek medical treatment abroad.
The KEK Nipa will be dedicated to logistics and energy distribution, proposed by PT Asinusa Putra Sekawan. Meanwhile, the International Health Tourism Batam zone, initiated by PT Karunia Praja Pesona, with an investment commitment of IDR 6.91 trillion and potential employment for 105,406 people, will include international-standard healthcare facilities. Apollo Hospital India, the main investor, plans to complete construction by 2026, boosting medical tourism. Lastly, the Green Industry Bungku KEK, proposed by PT Anugrah Tambang Industri, will focus on production, logistics, and energy development. The combined investment for these projects is estimated at IDR 161 trillion, highlighting a significant economic boost for the regions involved. These developments underscore Indonesia's commitment to enhancing its economic landscape, attracting international investments, and creating employment opportunities.
