The Tarakan Customs Office continues to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with significant export potential by assisting them with obtaining business licenses, including the Business Identification Number (NIB) and the Export Goods Notification (PEB). Andy Irwanto, Head of Outreach and Information Services at Tarakan Customs, emphasized on July 23, 2024, that they provide direct assistance to SMEs with export potential. This support includes proactive engagement with SME operators. Currently, several SMEs dealing in seafood and processed foods have received such assistance. With abundant marine resources in North Kalimantan, there is considerable potential for export. Tarakan Customs remains open to helping any SME that seeks to explore export opportunities.
Andy noted that while the assistance is ongoing, some SMEs face challenges in expanding beyond the local market to international export. Another issue is that export shipments often require transit through other cities, such as Surabaya, although certain products like crabs are exported directly from Tarakan to Singapore via air freight. “There is significant interest in exporting, and several SMEs have reached out personally or visited our office for information on licensing,” Andy added. He highlighted that the main issue remains with licensing processes for SMEs. Successful exports could add economic value to the region through foreign exchange earnings. The key is ongoing communication between Customs officials and SMEs to ensure they feel supported and to enhance their export potential, Andy concluded.
