The Riau Islands Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Center (Kepri) has certified crab fisheries commodities for various regions. During the first half of 2024, the crab traffic from Tanjungpinang reached 30.9 tons with an economic value of IDR 5.76 billion. Herwintarti, Head of Kepri Quarantine, expressed support for the development and downstream processing of products. The quarantine center plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality and safety of crabs for both domestic and export markets. The quarantine ensures product quality and safety by inspecting and monitoring health to prevent disease spread that could affect crab populations. "Quarantine also ensures food safety by inspecting microbiological contamination, residues, and contaminants in crab products. The health certificate issued by the quarantine is a key facilitation for trade, both inter-area and for export and import," said Herwin.
Crabs have significant economic potential for both domestic and export markets, with prices relatively higher than other fisheries commodities. Export markets include countries in Asia, Europe, and America, driving the growth of the crab meat processing industry in Indonesia. "Quarantine facilitates trade so that agricultural and fishery products can penetrate global markets, increasing the economic value of commodities and boosting the local economy," he added. The Raja Haji Fisabilillah Tanjungpinang Airport Service Unit of Kepri Quarantine recorded 309 shipments of crabs, destined for various regions including Batam, Jakarta, and East Java. Crabs are a favored marine fisheries commodity from Kepri among fishermen, consumers, and businesses. Quarantine plays a vital role in the shipment of these products, ensuring their health, safety, and quality. "Crabs have good nutritional content and high economic potential. Quarantine's role is crucial in maintaining the quality and safety of crabs. Therefore, always report to quarantine officers before transporting them," he emphasized.
